Crossing the Blue Mountains – Penrith to Katoomba

Stage 3: Blaxland to Springwood via Lost World Lookout & Sassafras Gully

13.7km +641m -506m  (Allow 6 hours)

This walk has it all – stunning lookouts, wildflowers, waterfalls, creek crossings, rainforests, trees and interesting rock ledges.

We scramble down the track to cross Glenbrook Creek and up to Bullants Lookout for morning tea. From here, we retrace our steps along Bullants Track and then detour to the fabulous Lost World Lookout.  Lost World Lookout is a cliff edge marked by a cross commemorating a local bushwalker.

From the lookout, there is more rock scrambling back to Glenbrook Creek, a quick detour for lunch at Psalm Rock, another wet foot crossing before we follow the creek a few kilometres passing several pools and a lovely, remote campground. There are a few tracks closed around here due to landslides. We head up Magdala Creek passing a couple of waterfalls. As the creek narrows, we hop over and back again a few times, before emerging at Springwood.

Post Trail Thoughts

This stage is one of my favourite hikes of the whole series. And, definitely one I want to repeat again.

Please note that the track is very steep in places and the terrain is challenging. The navigation is relatively straight forward. Highly recommended but be prepared. Allow 6 hours.
